A tea pot. Kyrgyz and Wakhi can drink up to 30 cups of salty milk tea daily, it helps with altitude dehydration. There is also a proverb that says that a Kyrgyz nomad will never walk, and always get on his horse, even when he goes to pee.

In summer 2005, my wife and I and our donkey Clémentine crossed Afghanistan’s Pamir into Pakistan’s Karakoram, over 300 kilometers through several high passes. We came to deliver letters from the Afghan Kyrgyz  community in exile in Eastern Turkey, to the Afghan Kyrgyz community still living in Afghanistan. They had not been in touch for 25 years.
