I had never seen such a huge scree. Down below, horsemen made their way to a wedding. This is the Wakhan Corridor, an old branch of the Silk Road and Alexander the Great and Marco Polo probably looked up this mountain when they passed here in ancient times.
During a 2008 winter expedition in the Pamir mountains of Afghanistan, a 4 weeks round trip, mostly on foot. That winter, 3 foreigners including myself met in the Afghan Pamir – that region had not been visited by foreigners since the Michaud (French photographers) visited in winter 1972.
